David and Alexandra are a special couple that I got to know over the course of a year and half planning their wedding. The vision of their perfect wedding day was anything but cookie cutter which is always fun for me. The couple wished to host an intimate gathering of only family and close friends and treat them to an evening that represented who they are as a couple.

Besides it being a small wedding of only 50 guests, David and Alex’s wedding was unique because they are Vegan and thus they wanted their wedding to be Vegan too. Despite the strict dietary guidelines, they wanted the wedding meal to be the focal point of the evening. Their goal was to delight their non-vegan guests with a fine dining experience using no animal byproducts. Although, it was a challenge, we were able to pull it off. My approach in planning this special wedding meal was to make sure guests couldn’t compare it to any other meal they had ever eaten, thus preventing the question “Where’s the Beef?” So the plan was to find a caterer to create a progressive five course 100% vegan tasting menu. Classe Catering rose to the challenge and made five amazing courses that satisfied even the most finicky of guests. The food was delicious and there was nothing but rave reviews!

David and Alex were married in a traditional Greek Orthodox ceremony at St. Sofia’s Church in Albany. Being history buffs and wanting to introduce their mostly out of town guests to the city of Albany, the Albany Institute of History and Art was the perfect venue for their reception. After the wedding ceremony, guests were invited to browse the galleries of the museum before being greeted with signature Albany-themed cocktails and a classical jazz guitarist that were the highlights of cocktail hour in the museum’s atrium. After cocktails, guests entered the historic Rice House mansion for the intimate sit down meal during which each guest offered a personal toast to the Bride and Groom.

The evening concluded with some traditional and not so traditional dances and a delicious vegan cake.

For David and Alex, the planning process was truly a journey. But in the end, all of the hard work and not settling paid off. Their wedding truly represented them as a couple and made their guests feel as special as they are!

Those of you who know me well and, lets face it, those of you who have met me only a couple times, know that I am obsessed with all things edible. So imagine my delight when I was recently invited to an Open House and tasting event for Whoopies are Good, a Ballston Spa based Whoopie Pie company. I spent one decadent evening tasting ten of the different gourmet flavors they offer. What a wonderful way to spend a weeknight!

A Little Bit of Country - Find the perfect setting for your "Country Chic" wedding

Some couples just don't feel like a traditional banquet room or upscale ballroom represent who they are as a couple. A Walk Down Memory Lane - Kevin & Erin (August 16, 2008)

I've recently been hired by a lovely couple to help them plan their 2011 nuptials to take place at The Palace Theatre in Albany. In working with them, I can't help thinking about one of my all time favorite weddings because it too was at the beautiful and historic Palace Theatre. This wedding was particularly special for me because it was the wedding of my brother and now sister-in-law, Kevin and Erin.

Kevin and Erin approached me with the pretty tall order of planning an elaborate affair in only three months time. Given that they were both extremely busy with their careers, they had no time to devote to the time consuming task of planning so I was happy to help and to this day, it is one of the most amazing events I've produced.

Since The Palace is a grand 1930's era theatre, it seemed natural to make this event a tribute to that time. Everything chosen was classic and timeless. From the brides full length lace gown and groom's simple black tuxedo to the choice of using fern and feathers as dominant elements of the floral design. The stage where guests danced the night away was designed to mimic an vintage Supperclub. Each selection was made to give guests the subtle feeling that they had entered the 1930's itself.

The evening was filled with surprising and special touches. We surprised the bride and groom by bringing in their beloved dog to act as the Ring Bearer and showering them with feathers during their recessional. The Bride and Groom surprised the guests by making their grand entrance on the stage lift. But the surprises didn't stop there. A talented singer, the bride serenaded her new husband at the reception. We provided a vintage microphone for that very special moment. At the end of the night, guests stopped by the concession stand, but not for the typical salty oil covered popcorn you might find in a theatre. Instead they filled personalized treat bags to the brim at a gourmet popcorn bar.

An amazing venue makes for an amazing event. For design inspiration, there was no need to look further than the inspirational surroundings of this iconic theatre. I look forward to creating an equally fabulous wedding for my new fab couple Tehra and Juan. Working with a completely different color scheme and spin on the grand theatre theme, I can't wait to see them make this location their own and their wedding a true representation of their style and personalities. Ceylane & Darren - September 25, 2010

I first met Ceylane and Darren in the summer of 2009. They had already selected 11 North Pearl Events Centre for their September 25, 2010 wedding reception. The goal in working with them was to create an uber-romantic reception as elegant as the setting in which it would take place. I think we achieved just that.

The color palette for the design would combine the bride's favorite color red with a fall inspired chocolate brown. Pops of gold and crystal bumped up the bling in the room. To give the couple the ultimate in romantic ambiance, the room was aglow with an abundance of candlelight and filled with classic red roses.

To create more visual interest in the room, the floor plan included long Tuscan style tables seating 20 guests, more traditional rounds and a long oval table for the bridal party. Instead of matching centerpieces on each table, a different but coordinating design was created for each shape of table. Long tables featured two tall centerpieces of curly willow branches, hanging candles and red rose petals. Then cubes of red roses were were added to create a floral table runner effect. Low and lush clusters of small cubes of red roses, floating and pillar candles adorned the round tables. For even more romance and bling, every surface of the room was sprinkled with red rose petals and crystals. The Chivari chairs, chargers and framed table numbers added the touches of gold to create a truly gilded feel to the room.

But a wedding is so much more than its design. This was a very special day for a special couple that has been together for a long time already. They injected their personalities and story into every detail. From the the music playlist, the menu, the custom monogram displayed on the wall to the lavender ceremony flowers selected in honor of the grooms late mother, the guests could make no mistake that it was the wedding day of Ceylane & Darren. It was an absolute pleasure working with such a wonderful couple. I know that their wedding day was just the beginning of a long and happy life together.

Paris Style in Albany New York

It's been nine months since I was contacted by a sweet woman by the name of Lynn with the most charming of southern accents. Turns out she was the mother of a groom getting married in September in Albany, but she and her son were actually from Tennessee. Her story was quite special so I was instantly intrigued about working on this project. Her son Adam was in Iraq serving our Country in his second tour there. His time there had been way too eventful and there were moments when she and her husband didn't know if their son was alive. They were counting down the days that his tour would end and he would return home to marry his beautiful young bride Leah. Wanting to honor her son and celebrate his safe return and their new beginning, she had a vision to create an extraordinary rehearsal dinner to kick off their wedding weekend.

Since the couple would be headed to Paris for their honeymoon, we decided to create a Paris inspired event. Everything from the food to the decor would emulate this beautiful city. There was no better location than the 42nd floor Observation Deck of the Corning Tower in downtown Albany.

70 guests enjoyed a five course french menu complete with pre-dessert cheese course. The design details of the room were chic in a simple palette of black and white with pops of royal purple. Centerpieces featured glowing cylinders of purple delphinium topped off with damask lampshades for a sophisticated and somewhat masculine look. The room also featured a lounge area with custom slip covered benches with coordinating damask pillows.

Lynn spared no expense in creating personalized details. Signs displaying the names of cities significant to the couple were displayed in the windows and pointed guests in their direction with mileage to each one from Albany. Custom stationery was created for everything from menu cards to the signature cocktail signage. In lieu of traditional escort cards, a special french style bulletin board was created, on which hung small velvet pouches with custom escort tags displaying their table number. Each pouch contained quarters for the observation deck view finders and displayed the message "Enjoy the View".

This event was a so fun to plan and coordinate. Guests had an amazing time celebrating in this unique location. The bride and groom left elated and ready to walk down the aisle. By all reports, the wedding day of Adam and Leah went perfectly and the two are enjoying the "real" Paris! We wish them both a long happy life together and thank Adam for his service to our country. Another thanks to Lynn for trusting us with this special event. It was a pleasure.

They learned "how to tie the knot"

It was a fabulous day to talk weddings! On a sunny Sunday in August, Inspired Occasions hosted our first education seminar at the gorgeous Pat's Barn at Rensselaer Technology Park. I am proud to say that "How-to Tie the Knot: Planning Strategies for Today's D.I.Y. Bride" was a big hit.

So what did we do all day? The morning was alll about planning basics. We talked about setting priorities, creating timelines and tackling the dreaded BUDGET. Registrants were also treated to expert information from a few talented guest speakers. Michele Peters of Ambiance Florals & Events was on hand to take the intimidation out of floral decisions. A talk on photography options and trends was given by Yvette Wilson from Photography In Design. And because planning a wedding can at times be a stressful process, Certified Life Coach Diane Albano was on hand to teach some techniques for taking it down a notch.

The highlight of the day for me and for the seminar participants was our afternoon design workshop when we transformed a reception table from "Tired to Inspired" using some easy to follow design principles and incorporating a few creative do it yourself projects.

Feedback from everyone who attended was overwhelmingly positive. I know that I had an absolute blast talking about my favorite topic all day. Thanks to all those brides and their guests who participated. You guys were such a fun group!

I had a vision of a relaxed and informative day all about supporting brides on their planning journey. I am so grateful to my Inspired Occasions team for helping me bring that vision to life. Couldn't have done it without you guys!

Inspired Occasions Launches TV Commercial

I am thrilled to announce the launch of Inspired Occasions' first television commercial! When I started this business two years ago, my plan was to let it grow organically and slowly over time. Well, it turns out I'm not nearly that patient and my dream to make event planning services the norm in the Capital District area was far more pressing than I had originally admitted. So, the next natural step to take was to start getting the word out through radio, print and television advertising. Inspired Occasions is in the press!

It has been over a year since I came up with the idea to create a Bride Education branch of my business. I came to realize that no matter how flexible and accessible Inspired Occasions' services are, there are going to be brides that will ultimately choose to plan their wedding solo. However, with a long standing value of bringing valuable information, support and advice to all brides, I decided there must be a way that I can serve these brides as well.

Finally, my idea has taken shape and will come to life on this Sunday, August 29, 2010 when we launch our very first bridal seminar "How-to Tie the Knot: Planning Strategies for Today's D.I.Y. Bride." With an agenda that covers planning basics, do-it-yourself design, stress management and much more, I am thrilled to bring such valuable information to the brides and their families in attendance. It is a day designed to support and empower each and every one of them to create the wedding of their dreams and enjoy the process of doing it.

What I didn't anticipate when I started this venture is that there would be media interest in such a concept. Imagine my excitement when I was invited to appear on YNN (Capital News 9) in a live in-studio interview with their afternoon anchor. I had a blast and it was so thrilling to be able to spread the word to everyone in the area about what Inspired Occasions is up to. The good news doesn't stop there. This week, my interview with Saratoga.com's Dave Bigler is being featured on http://www.saratoga.com/. To check it out, click on "featured video". And the interest keeps coming . . . A TimesUnion reporter will be joining us for the seminar on Sunday and writing a feature about it.

I am amazed at the attention this event is receiving. I can only hope that it is because it is satisfying a need among local brides and that this will be the first of many successful bride education seminars.

Natalie & Brian (Lake George) - Mary 29, 2010

The wedding of Natalie and Brian on May 29, 2010 has to be one of my favorites. Natalie is proof positive that you can plan a beautiful, detailed and chic wedding on a budget.

Natalie contacted me a year in advance of her wedding date with major concerns about the venue she had selected for her Adirondack destination wedding. Her recent site visit had raised some major red flags and her intention was to hire a planner to manage venue issues on her wedding day. After further discussion, I helped Natalie come to the decision that there was still time to avoid disaster and change her wedding venue.

Once the venue disaster had been averted and a new location was selected, it was time to help Natalie create a chic wedding with a modern color palette and a few rustic Adirondack touches. I’m proud to say that we accomplished just that!

The ceremony location selected was Shepard Park right on the shores of Lake George. The natural stone amphitheatre was an economical choice and offered a Celtic feel in tribute to the couple’s heritage. Floral Designer Martin Dodge of Drops of Jupiter transformed the simple alter area into something extraordinary with a handmade ceremony structure of birch, vines and clusters of hydrangea and cream roses. Personalized seat cushions doubled as a comfortable seat for guests on the stone benches and a take-home wedding favor.

Natalie arrived in style in an antique car and walked down the aisle arm in arm with her brother to the magical sound of a bagpiper hidden up on the bluff behind the ceremony. Gave me the chills! After the “I-do’s” the bagpiper led the parade of the bride and groom to the shore for formal photographs.

The magical tent reception for her 85 guests was decked out with the colors of pewter, white, pale blue with modern pops of lime green. The groom’s love of fishing was incorporated into the design of the escort cards and table names. Martin Dodge worked his magic again with tall and romantic centerpieces of birch, hydrangea and hanging Amaranthus. Plain poles of the tent were turned into birch trees with glowing hanging lanterns. The overall effect . . . enchanted Adirondacks! The star of the reception was the elegant display of the couple’s favorite dessert, mini cheesecakes, which took the place of a traditional wedding cake. Yummy!!!

Although Natalie’s planning process was rocky at times, I’m proud to say that I helped her pull off an elegant event representative of her style and who she and Brian are as a couple. It was an absolute pleasure working with them and I wish them all the happiness in the world!

Michele & David - May 8, 2010

The nuptials of Michele and David took place on Saturday, May 8th at the First Reformed Church of Schenectady. The Stockade Inn was the venue selected for their chic vintage flea market-inspired reception.

When Michele hired me in early 2009 to be her day-of wedding coordinator, I was intrigued by the vision of her day. Michele was the definition of a D.I.Y. bride with plans to create everything for her wedding right down to the ceremony flowers. Being a part of so many weddings, I knew what an undertaking that was. She had her hands full.

I’m thrilled to say that Michele didn’t disappoint. Her attention to detail and subtle interpretation of her overall theme were impressive. She chose a subdued color palate of cream and blush pink and touches of gold. Instead of live flowers, centerpieces were antique birdcages filled with metallic glass spheres surrounded by candles and shabby-chic accent pieces. With the candles aglow, the room was warm and romantic. Guest favors doubled as escort cards with hand-tied personalized tags on each one with the guest name and table number. The fashion of the night even tied into the theme. Michele glided down the aisle in a beautiful ball gown for her ceremony, but slipped into a vintage inspired party dress for her reception.

Day-of coordination is not always the easiest job to do. Our experience as planners depends on the decisions made by the couple when planning the event. Michele was an absolute dream to work with. Although executing a do-it-yourself décor design can often be more physical labor, our bride was so organized that it almost felt easy. All of the vendors she selected were great fun to work with and did a fantastic job. So thank you to my team and to the Stockade Inn (Reception Venue), Heather Bolm-Tallman (Photography), Villa Italia (Cake), Peter from What’s Happening Productions (Videography) and Fernando from Piano Man (DJ).

May was such a crazy month for Inspired Occasions that I'm just getting around to filling you all in on the details of the weddings we produced that month. I'll start with our first . . .

The wedding of Nadia and Khalid turned out to be a story of color and culture. The tall order for me was to design a wedding ceremony and reception that combined the significant elements of the Bride and Groom’s Pakistani culture with their more modern sense of style. I’m proud to say that in a short three month planning period, we went from having no design concept to an exotic affair for 300 guests fit for royalty. The color palette inspired by the preferences of the couple was that of rich jewels . . . sapphire blue, garnet red and rich orange.

The setting for this elaborate affair was The Albany Marriott. The day began with an intimate family-only ceremony. The modern bride opted to wear a fully length beaded white wedding outfit rather than the traditional red. However, to ensure that the traditional wedding color of red had a strong presence, the bride’s aisle and ceremony stage were carpeted in a rich garnet color. The couple exchanged their promises and rings on a glowing stage draped with sheer fabric and strands of cascading orchids.

Following the ceremony, Nadia and Khalid’s guests were treated to a feast for both the eyes and the stomach. Guests were welcomed into the grand ballroom which was decked out with sunset colored perimeter lighting, sapphire blue satin linens and tablescapes of dramatic glowing centerpieces, specialty folded napkins and golden chocolate favors. Authentic Pakistani music and food brought in from New York City ensured that the families’ heritage remained the focal point of the celebration. Highlights of the evening included a traditional dance performed by the women of the Groom’s family and a traditional Mirror ceremony.

It was an absolute pleasure to work with this fabulous couple. From the first time I met with this family, the planning process became a true collaboration between Bride and Groom, Planner and Mother. And together, we were able to put together the perfect day for this special couple!

Let Them Eat Cake!!!

Ever heard someone say, “I’m really not a cake person?” Well that is not me! I love cake! So imagine my delight when I discovered an amazingly innovative local business that is filling what I consider a very important need . . . mobile cupcakes! Lorraine and John Murphy, co-owners of Bettie’s Cakes based in Saratoga Springs have created a fabulous bakery on wheels that brings their delicious cupcakes to wherever you need your fix. Their double-decker 1950’s style bus can seat 25 people and can be hired for any occasion. I’m thinking . . . surprise late night snack for a wedding reception, a sweet treat for the mitzvah or sweet sixteen guest of honor, Sunday breakfast . . . the options are endless!

As soon as I made this discovery, I realized it was imperative that I test out the product so that I could make an informed recommendation to my clients. Tough job, but I managed try four scrumptious designer cupcakes including Chocolate Peanut Butter, Key Lime and Red Velvet. My favorite was the Cosmopolitan which was a cranberry flavored cupcake with lime icing inspired by the release of the new Sex in the City movie. It was both adorable and delectable.

So I’m wondering which of my hip clients are going to be the first ones to surprise their guests with this mobile sweetshop? Also wondering . . . what other treats can we put on wheels?

Wedding Season is Here!

Inspired Occasions is feeling the love. Saturday marks the beginning of May and the beginning of a busy month of incredible weddings we are so fortunate to be a part of.

Right out of the gate, we get to produce an amazing Pakistani wedding for a very special couple, Nadia and Khalid. It’s been a blast putting this one together because the clients truly came to us with a blank canvas on which we have been able to create a wedding full of exotic flair. For 300 guests, the ballroom at the Albany Marriott will be transformed with specialty lighting, exotic orchids and custom everything in a color palette of jewels. Watching this vision come to life is going to be thrilling!

One week later, we’ll be a part of the completely different, but equally fabulous wedding of Michele and David who will wed at the First Reformed Church in Schenectady and celebrate with friends and family at the Stockade Inn for their reception. The entire design and every detail of this wedding is 100% the bride and is totally unique. I have fallen in love with her Vintage Paris theme and am amazed that I don’t miss the flowers at all. Michele is an amazing D.I.Y. bride who has created every last detail of her shabby-chic inspired wedding including the bouquets, centerpieces, programs, custom favors and escort cards, etc in a subtle color palette of white, ivory and the palest blush pink. Our team will be there to execute every last detail of her vision so that she can sit back and enjoy the fruits of all her hard labor.

Last, but certainly not least, we will finish out our busy month with the Adirondack wedding of Natalie and Brian. The two will wed on the shores of Lake George and host a unique tent reception for their 100 guests at B&B on the Green in Hudson. The bride wanted the design of her wedding to be modern and fun and yet have touches of Adirondack details. Beginning with the colors gunmetal gray, silver and pale blue, we decided to add a fun pop of lime green to just about everything. This is not your typical woodlands affair. This is a chic event with creative and modern touches of the great outdoors. The floral design will really set this one apart. Martin Dodge from Drops of Jupiter will provide some amazing creations including a ceremony structure of birch, sheer fabric and clusters of blue hydrangea, lush floral centerpieces in custom made birch and barnwood boxes and an escort card table completely covered in moss.

How amazing to have three weddings, each one as unique as the couples themselves! This is why I love my job. These three couples’ stories and personalities will be embodied in each of these events and I get to be a part of that story. One of the most important factors in choosing a planner is the personal connection you have with him or her. Therefore, knowing the personality, professional ethics and values of the planner are critical to making a good selection. It is who I am that makes me love what I do and plan thoughtful events. In this day and age when most people find their vendors online, its important for all vendors to have a strong web presence. However, since starting my Company two years ago, I’ve struggled with how to convey who I am to potential clients doing casual online research. Let there be light . . . and no ugly carpet!

We’ve all been to a wedding or corporate seminar in a typical hotel ballroom right? Ever caught yourself completely captivated by the psychedelic pattern of the carpet on the floor? Seriously, who dreams up these designs??? Such carpet may be durable and hide stains well, but trying to figure out how to make your romantic pale color palate work in a room with such a strong colored and patterned carpet is definitely a challenge. However there IS a solution to this design problem. . . specialty lighting.

Specialty lighting is an often overlooked wedding element that can completely transform an event space. If you layer your lighting properly, you can make that beauty-challenged carpet virtually disappear! First, using uplights around the perimeter of the entire room will wash the walls and ceiling with light, bringing the eye upward and away from the carpet. Next draw guests’ eyes toward your beautiful tables by “pin spotting” them. This is the technical term for lights mounted above and pointing directly on each table in your room. Don’t forget to pin spot special tables such as the cake and sweetheart tables. Your final layer of lighting is, of course, candles. Cover your tables with the gorgeous glow of flickering candlelight. Once the perimeter,

pin spot and candle lights are in place, dim or completely turn off the house lights and you’ll be amazed by the effect. Not only will you have eliminated the carpet-factor, you will have also created an amazing and romantic ambiance that your guests will never forget!

YOUR SURVIVAL STRATEGY: Enjoy the Journey from Engagement to the Alter

Now that the holidays are over and Valentine’s Day is almost here, many lucky ladies out there will find themselves engaged! Tempting for all you new brides to be to run out and buy every wedding magazine you can find . . . purchase your four-inch thick planning notebook . . . and shop for the most exciting stuff . . . dresses, those cute ring bearer pillows, bubbles, favors, etc.

My best advice? Slow down. First savor the celebration of your engagement. What a huge milestone in your life; don’t pass over it so quickly to get to the wedding faster. Shout it from the rooftops, polish your ring everyday and show off your fiancé with pride.

When it’s time to start planning try to resist the temptation to just do the fun stuff first. Go ahead and get the magazines and start clipping pictures of things you love, but before you start buying everything that strikes you, make sure you have definite answers to TWO very important questions:

1. What is your budget and where are the funds coming from? The answer to this question will dictate almost every other decision you make along the way. Be sure you know for sure what you have to spend and that you have commitments from those spending it.

2. What is most important to you? Make sure that you know what your wedding priorities are. Early on make a list of everything your budget needs to cover; i.e. flowers, rings, venue, etc. Literally rank the items beginning with what’s most important to you and ending with what is least important.

Knowing how much you have to spend and what your priorities are will give you the blueprint for your planning process. Begin making decisions and purchases in the order of your priority list. This will ensure that you make the best use of your money and any necessary compromises or sacrifices are on the things you care the least about.

And all those pictures you clipped from the magazines? Use these as your inspiration to pull all the details together. Bring them to vendors such as cake and floral designers so that they get a true sense of what shapes, sizes, colors and styles appeal to you.

Follow these steps and you have a practical strategy for not only surviving the planning process . . . but enjoying it.

"Reality" vs. Reality

Okay, I admit it! I am a wedding planner and all those reality television shows that chronicle those in this profession . . . ? I watch them all. Yup! From My Fair Wedding to Platinum Weddings, and when I’m in the mood for a chuckle, even Bridezillas. I must admit that even though I am immersed in this industry on a daily basis, I find it validating to see others take on similar challenges, struggle through the stressful “oh crap” moments and, of course, experience the rush of a completed and successful event.

However, I also must admit that I’m beginning to lose my love affair with wedding reality shows. Quite frankly the reality on these shows doesn’t seem to mimic the reality I see each day. More and more of these programs seem to show weddings only through diamond encrusted glasses . . . as if all brides and grooms have a bottomless bucket of wedding money. And the wedding planners seem to be playing the role of Fairy Godmothers (or fathers) rather than practical and organized professionals whose role is to work with the constraints that they’re given.

Case in point. I happened upon a new show the other day. I won’t name names. Here’s the jist . . Three wedding planners competed for a booking. When I heard the concept I was thrilled. Now here is a show that will display what really goes on, right? The couple gave the planners their preferences and their very modest budget. I couldn’t wait to see these three seasoned planners pitch their individual proposals of how they were going to give this couple the wedding they envisioned without breaking their budget. This is my challenge everyday. What happened in the end? The couple picks the “celebrity” planner who clearly called in every favor he could to give them a wedding that, from what I could tell, cost at least triple their budget. Now I don’t fault a couple for getting a bunch of freebies to make their dream wedding a reality. Who wouldn’t? But for once, I’d like to see a reality show tell the story of a couple and their planner working together to bring their vision to life under realistic circumstances.

Reality is that “real” couples have “real” budgets and “real” constraints. A planner’s role isn’t just to wave their magic wand and find a way to get people things that cannot otherwise afford. Unless there is a television studio behind it, this does not happen. But planners can make magic with real couples by getting to know them and calling upon their own creativity and extensive knowledge of the industry. Our relationships with local vendors, negotiating skills and creative ideas of how to do more with less can provide couples with significant savings and fantastic events. I make it my goal to bring savings to my clients at least equivalent to my own fee.

What I want every bride out there to know is that you don’t have to have a bottomless bucket of wedding money and a “fairy godmother” to have a fabulous wedding. Wedding planners are accessible to all kinds of brides. Most have flexible services and are accustomed to working within the guidelines given by the clients. And most importantly, they can help you create a fantastic wedding that is uniquely you!

No chamapgne and roses at this party . . . Red, white and blue and lots of yellow ribbons

Taking a break from weddings, I had the honor to be a part of a very special event . . . the surprise birthday and farewell party for Sgt. 1st Class Michael Horner of Clifton Park, New York who is being deployed to Kuwait just after the holidays. With 17 years as an Army National Guardsman and 18 years as a member of the Clifton Volunteer Park Fire Department, this brave man was truly deserving of a special sendoff.

My involvement all began over the summer when Michael’s wife, Christine, contacted me for advice on choosing the perfect venue for this family and community affair. What better place than the firehouse, a second home to her husband? Compelled to help this family and to honor a man who serves my country AND my local community, I jumped in with both feet and offered to help Christine plan the entire event. Over several months, Christine and I had a great time putting together a party full of patriotic flair.

Of course the room was bathed in red, white and blue . . . everything from balloons to cupcakes reminded guests of Mike’s service to our country. Guests were given favors of yellow ribbon car magnets and pins to symbolize a collective hope for Mike’s safe return. Adding a little humor to the event, the custom designed cake featured a bomb with a fireman extinguishing its flame.

One of Christine’s main goals in planning this event was to ensure that the large number of kids attending this event would really enjoy it. I am happy to say that we didn’t disappoint. I called in a unique entertainment company called Games2U who provided a mobile gaming van, hamster ball and laser tag for kids (of all ages) to enjoy and with the gorgeous weather we had that day . . . enjoy they did!

Negotiate (Tip #5: Champagne Wedding . . . Boxed Wine Budget)

This tip is a biggie that can result in big savings! Negotiating terms with wedding vendors can take on many forms. It is not always as simple as asking for a lower price for any given service.

The first step to negotiation is doing your homework. Know what the going rate is for services in your area and make sure that you talk with more than one vendor so that you can make valid comparisons between them. Once you do this, you’ll have a better idea of who you are in a position to negotiate with.

Next is determining who has more “chips” in any given negotiation. If you choose to have your wedding during an off-peak season or day, your negotiating power can be pretty high. The vendor may really need your sale and with the pool of customers smaller for your date, they may be more willing to accommodate you. However, make sure to use great tact and diplomacy when negotiating. Demanding a lower price may not get you far. Instead, a great way to begin this discussion with a vendor would be . . . “we chose to have an off-season wedding because we have a limited budget. This is what we had in mind to spend. Is there any way that we can get the price closer to this number?” This respectful request provides the vendor the opportunity to make a proposal to you that may be more enticing.

In the contrary situation, having your wedding on a Saturday during the peak season, your negotiation power can be limited. After all, it is likely that the vendor could have their pick of brides and grooms for that date. However, if you aren’t able to negotiate a lower price for a service, try requesting modifications to their package/service in a way that works for your budget. For example, if you’re wanting to have an extra hour of open bar at your venue but cannot afford the extra expense, try to find an opportunity to exchange some other part of the package such as the champagne toast or the dessert and have guests toast with what is in their hand and enjoy the wedding cake as dessert. For photographers and videographers, try shortening the coverage period or cutting down on the number of DVD’s or prints. This form of negotiation may not lower your bottom line, but makes sure that you’re getting what is most important to you for the money that you spend.

The most important thing to remember about negotiating is not making demands but instead inviting a vendor into a mutual discussion of how to structure services to meet your particular needs and budget. If you find a vendor completely unwilling to accommodate you, don’t be afraid to keep looking for someone else who will.

So . . . get out there and negotiate!

Retail, Recycle and Recoup (Tip #4: Champagne Wedding . . . Boxed Wine Budget)

It takes a special kind of bride to really capitalize on this tip. If you love to shop and find bargains, this tip is for you. Use it wisely and save big bucks!

With elaborate craft and party stores in almost every neighborhood and endless online resources for wedding and party supplies, purchasing items directly instead of renting or purchasing them through a vendor can add up to huge savings. The basic idea is this, figure out what items you can buy directly at a lower price than what you would pay a vendor. After the wedding, sell those items to another bride looking to do the same thing, recouping a portion of your funds.

For example, glassware for floral arrangements can be a significant line item in your floral bill. Instead of renting them or purchasing them from your florist, buy them yourself at your local craft store. To really capitalize on your savings, make sure you use the handful of coupons that are in the weekly newspapers. Usually you can get 40-50% off of one item and most stores accept competitors’ coupons. Go a few times a week taking a new coupon each time or take a few friends to the store, giving them each a coupon to use, and walk away with your glassware at half the price. Better still . . . when your wedding is over, list the glassware for sale on a website such as Craigslist, Ebay or Weddingbee and get some or ALL of your money back!

You can use the same strategy with online shopping for items such as linens, lanterns, candy bar supplies, etc. However, there are a couple of things you should be aware of when ordering such items online. Be sure to review the return policy. Since you are not able to inspect the quality of items until they arrive at your door, make sure there won’t be a large expense for returning those items if they are not up to snuff. Also, don’t forget that a significant portion of online pricing is in the shipping and handling cost. When trying to determine your savings, make sure you account for those expenses.

Not all items you can purchase are appropriate for resale, but don’t let that stop you. Purchasing items directly such as favor boxes and fillings, candles, placecards, etc., rather than obtaining them through a vendor, will allow you the opportunity to get them on sale or with a coupon and without an upcharge often affixed by a vendor. Bear in mind that those same classified websites you can use to sell your items can also be a great place to purchase them.

Being a savvy shopper and giving yourself plenty of time to collect the items you need, will definitely help you stick to your budget. If you have the time and the bargain shopping skills, you’ll be amazed at what you can have and how much you can save!

Prioritize, prioritize, prioritize (Tip #3: Champagne Wedding . . . Boxed Wine Budget)

Planning a wedding is a huge undertaking. Sometimes the greatest challenge is knowing where and how to begin. This tip really should be number one because it’s a simple way to get started planning a beautiful yet affordable wedding. All you’ll need is a piece of paper, a pencil and your fiancé (IF you value his or her opinion!).

FIRST, make a list of all the major elements of your wedding. Here is a basic list to get you started:

· Wedding Date/Season
· Location
· Food
· Bar Arrangements
· Flowers & Décor
· Attire
· Music/Entertainment
· Stationary (invitations, menus, programs, etc.)
· Favors
· Transportation
· Cake
· Photography
· Videography

NEXT, rank the items in the order of importance to YOU by re-writing the list in that order. For example, if you absolutely must have your wedding on a specific date or in a specific season, “Wedding Date/Season” would rank #1. If you then have your heart set on a specific band for your reception, that would rank #2 and so on.

FINALLY, start planning your wedding in order of your priority rankings. In the above example, you’d start by choosing a few “doable” dates, finding out which of those dates the band is available, and then finding a location that is also available on those final dates. In contrast, if location ranks higher than date, you’ll find your location and then choose an available date for that specific location. Continue booking your vendors and making your selections in the order of your list.

By using this basic guideline, you’ll ensure that you get first choice for most of the items that are most important to you. In addition, the majority of the money will be spent on those items. As you make your way toward the bottom of the list, you may find that money is starting to get tight or your choices are limited. But lucky for you, any compromises that must be made will be ones that matter the least to you.

In the end, you get what you want . . . a wedding that is uniquely you and peace of mind knowing that the money was well spent. Happy prioritizing everybody!

Finding dual purposes for elements of a wedding is one of my favorite ways to reduce spending.

For example, perso

nalized favor boxes filled with an edible treat can double as escort cards when you simply add the table number. Guests will find their box on the escort "card" table, use it to find their seat and then enjoy it as their favor.

A huge money saver is finding a way incorporate elements of your ceremony décor into your reception. Alter arrangements can double as centerpieces at reception buffet tables and smaller hanging arrangements from the pews can be the perfect adornment for bars and restrooms. You can even make use of your beautiful wedding party bouquets. Simply pop your bouquets into vases and instantly decorate the head table.

So put on your thinking cap, get creative, see "double" . . . and save, save, save!

D.I.Y. (Tip #1: Champagne Wedding . . . Boxed Wine Budget)

DIY! That’s right . . . “do it yourself.” Let me preface this by saying, please do not make the mistake of doing it ALL yourself. There are so many great resources for DIY brides these days, but no matter how simple each project seems unto itself, try to do too many and you’ll soon find yourself buried in tedious projects, late night trips to the craft store and days of set up prior to your event.

That being said, there is a place in every wedding for one or two great DIY projects. For example, instead of hiring a stationer or printer to create all of your stationary elements, choose one to do yourself. If you are computer savvy and have a good quality printer, try using one of the high quality invitation kits out there. Add a few of your own embellishments like crystal appliqués or specialty ribbon to pump it up and make it unique while dramatically cutting your stationary cost.

Or try this DIY cost-cutter . . . instead of having menu cards at each place setting, order or create three per table, display them in frames you already have or on small inexpensive easels that coordinate with your décor and place them on the tables to add another visually interesting element to your tablescape. Displaying three of them on a round table will ensure that each guest can view it while cutting your menu card order by at least half.

When choosing which DIY project(s) to take on, carefully consider the amount of time, skill, tools and manpower you have available to you. Pick one or two that you can reasonably execute and, most importantly, will effect the bottom line. Happy crafting everyone!

According to The Wedding Report, the average spending on weddings dropped 14% alone in the second quarter of this year. Obviously brides, grooms and their families are really feeling the pinch of a down economy when it comes to planning their weddings.

But after dreaming about your wedding for months, years or even decades, how do you compromise between what you've always wanted for your wedding and what you can now afford? With the right strategies, you may not have to. Follow this series of articles and you’ll learn my five favorite tips for having a champagne wedding on a boxed wine budget!

When it comes to event vendors, the correct answer is "Yes we can!"

If you're in the process of planning your wedding or another event, I don't have to tell you that there is no shortage of vendors in any given area. How do you determine which one is best for you? Of course, with budget being such a large factor for most, it is tempting to compare vendors using two main criteria: 1) the services being provided and 2) the price.

Although these are both important factors to consider, you cannot underestimate the important of "attitude" when comparing and contrasting your vendor options. Make sure that before making your selection that you have a face to face conversation which each vendor. You'll soon find out that vendors vary greatly when it comes to the issue of flexibility. Weddings and events are like people . . . no two are exactly alike. The event should be a unique reflection of those being celebrated and great event vendors will work hard to make sure that it is. If during your initial meeting with a vendor he or she responds to your specific requests or ideas with explanations of why it won't work or why he or she can't do it or seems to dismiss such requests with their own alternatives, beware! Often this is a red flag for a vendor who is more interested in doing it their way rather than going above and beyond to create something special for you, the client, so keep looking. Trust me, there are plenty of great and talented vendors out there who are passionate about their craft and about giving their clients the best service experience they can.

So when selecting your vendors, follow these steps:

Research. Look for vendors for each service area and find out what each one has to offer. Be sure to read reviews and ask friends and other vendors for their recommendations. Do not hesitate to contact a local event planner for their assistance. Planners have extensive knowledge of what vendors are out there and can put you in touch with some that meet your criteria that you may not even be aware of.
Narrow it down. Identify 2-3 vendors in each service area that meet your criteria for quality and price.
Meet them. Arrange to meet the vendors prior to making a choice. Develop a list of questions ahead of time that specifically pertain to your event and pay close attention to how they answer.
Go with your gut. Do not underestimate your own intuition. Vendors who not only are open to your ideas or suggestions but show genuine excitement about your event and how they can enhance it are your best bet!

By now, most everyone has been to an wedding or event featuring a candy buffet. Don't get me wrong. It's still a trend that I love. You can never go wrong offering guests the opportunity to be a "kid in a candy store" and indulge in the forbidden! However, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this twist on the treat buffet concept . . . a gourmet popcorn buffet. Fill a table with different size and shape containers filled with many different varieties of this sweet and salty treat. Make sure to provide guests with personalized bags or containers so they can fill up and take their goodies home as their favor.

A wide variety of gourmet popcorn sold in bulk may be more difficult to find locally in certain areas, so it's time to surf the web. After meeting wedding planner, Jenny Orsini of Style Network’s “Whose Wedding is it Anyway” at a specialized industry training last year, I recently had the honor of working with Jenny and her Pampered Bride Weddings team on the wedding day of the elaborate celebration of Lauren and Geoff. The ceremony was held at the majestic Saint John the Evangelist Church in Schenectady, New York and guests were treated to a most fabulous reception at the Inn at Erlowest in Lake George.

No stone was left unturned for this platinum wedding with a color palette of peach, ivory and touches of green and gold. The décor was grand with alternating high and low centerpieces featuring an abundance of romantic blooms and sparking crystals, but the show stopper was the dramatic and decadent crystal tree on the head table. These exquisite floral designs were courtesy of New Jersey's A Touch of Elegance. Complimenting the flowers were the stunning place settings featuring gold rimmed plates, crystal adorned round menu cards and custom made napkins and rings.

The guests were pampered with an elaborate cocktail hour on the terrace which included a martini bar, ice luge, chef attended stations and an abundance of other hors d’oeuvres. The sit down dinner and dance reception featured food by Mansion Catering and the dynamic sounds of The New York Players. Following the meal and some dancing, fireworks lit up the sky and guests wandered between the cigar roller and expansive candy buffet.

I must commend Jenny, her team and all the wonderful vendors for putting on a fantastic event for Lauren and Geoff. It was an honor to be a part of it and learn from the best!

Think small to save BIG

In today's economy, I meet with more and more couples who are struggling to plan their dream weddings and not break the bank. Although I am always full of tips on how to multipurpose items or create inexpensive "DIY" decor, the bottom line is that the best way to lower your cost is to downsize your guest list. One great rule of thumb . . . This will be the best party you've ever been to in your life. If you're not prepared or wanting to take at least five minutes out of your evening to have a conversation with the person, you may want to leave them off the list.
The best way to conceptualize the "cost of people" is to actually figure out your per person cost for the wedding and multiply that number by the number of people that you might be on the fence about. How much could that amount buy you in additional special elements of the wedding such as upgrades in food or decor or better yet how many cocktails could it afford you on your honeymoon? The most important thing is that on your wedding day you are surrounded by those people who love you, have influenced you the most and will be a part of your new life as a married couple. Some of the best weddings I've ever been to are the ones that are relatively small yet elaborate in the details. With a smaller guest list, you can afford more of the extras that really make a wedding "WOW". The bonus is that with a scaled back guest list you have much greater flexibility in selecting a unique venue and the event itself takes on a cozier and more intimate feel that guests appreciate and remember. The bottom line . . . Think small and you'll save BIG!!!

VIDEOGRAPHY -- WORTH THE $$$?

I read an interesting statistic today from The Wedding Report. Apparently 81% of wedding couples procure photography services for their big day; while only 37% of couples seek the service of a videographer; a disturbing statistic I’d say. I happen to think that videography is one of the most underestimated and overlooked wedding services of them all, (aside from wedding planners, of course).

Sure it is traditional to hire a photographer and have the beautiful album on your coffee table for a year or two or at least until the soon to follow babies start cruising and drooling all over it. However, no matter how talented your photographer may be, there is a snapshot in time created with a video that two dimensional images can never capture. Some examples . . . the voices and expressions of loved ones who will one day depart this world; the excitement and animation of children who will soon grow, change and be almost unrecognizable; the crack in the best man’s voice when he gives his traditional toast and even when the guest with a big frizzy head of hair gets too close to the candles and guests start asking, “What’s that smell?” (True story!)

Obviously it’s a time when budget is of big concern to many couples planning such an expensive event. Videographers in a wide range of price exist in most areas. Do some comparison shopping and then inquire directly with those videographers that you’re most interested in. If you are still concerned about the expense, ask the videographer directly if there is any way to modify their packages to fit your budget. Often times removing special features like a photo montage, guest interviews or hi-tech editing effects can lower the overall cost. Even completely raw footage is better than no record of the day at all.

A side note for brides . . . remember this . . . you’re the last one in the room during the ceremony. Don’t you want the opportunity to see the expression on the face of your groom when he enters the room, the way your bridesmaids gracefully flow down the aisle or the snot streaming from the frightened ring bearer’s nose as he tentatively heads down the aisle toward the safety of his Mommy? Any couple’s wedding day is a blur. It’s amazing that months or years are spent planning an event that passes in what seems like an instant and couples are paying a hefty price for such an event. A lifelong account of such a sacred event; one you can relive on every anniversary; one you can share with your children and your children’s children . . . priceless!
